Watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat was truly magical, and exploring the red-sandstone temples around Siem Reap with knowledgeable English-speaking guides made the history come alive. The support vehicles, boat transfers, and comfortable accommodations ensured a smooth and stress-free experience throughout the 10 days.
I recently completed the 10-Day Mekong & Angkor Tour in North-East Cambodia, and unfortunately, it was a big disappointment—especially considering the $1,790 price tag. The itinerary sounds amazing on paper: kayaking the Mekong, cycling through villages, visiting Angkor Wat at sunrise, exploring Sambor Prei Kuk, and spotting dolphins near Kratie. In reality, the experience felt poorly organized and far from “curated” or “immersive.” First, the bikes were old and not well maintained. Gears slipped constantly, and brakes felt unsafe on several stretches. For a tour that heavily advertises cycling, this was unacceptable. The “support vehicle always nearby” was not consistently accessible, and at times we waited in the heat far longer than we should have. Accommodation was another letdown. The homestay on Koh Trong was described as “authentic,” but it felt uncomfortable and lacked basic cleanliness. Some hotels were average at best, definitely not what I’d expect for the price. Meals were repetitive and sometimes cold, and there was little flexibility for dietary needs despite prior notice. Guiding quality was inconsistent. While one guide was friendly, explanations at key sites like Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm were rushed and surface-level. We often felt hurried rather than given “destination depth.” Sunrise at Angkor Wat was overcrowded and poorly managed—no effort to position the group away from the biggest crowds. The kayaking portion on the Mekong felt more like a long paddle with minimal interpretation of the environment. Dolphin spotting near Kampi was extremely brief, and expectations were set unrealistically high. To make matters worse, the Angkor entrance fee wasn’t included, which felt like a hidden extra given how central it is to the tour. For this price, it absolutely should have been covered. Overall, the tour overpromised and underdelivered. Cambodia itself is beautiful, and places like Siem Reap and the Mekong region are worth visiting—but I would strongly recommend organizing a similar trip independently or with a different operator. This experience did not justify the cost.
